Science and Young Living

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

Rccently I had the opportunity to hear Chris Bowerbank, Director, Analytical Sciences R&D at Young Living Essential Oils, speak last weekend and it was wonderful to hear the scinece aspect of our products.

Science is one of our core pillars in Young Living and jsut one of many things that brings such incredible peace of mind when using the products.

I love knowing how much research and care goes into every drop of oil produced and into every supplement that is curated.

Each week, Chris Bowerbank shares on social media some mind blowing information about each of the products we have. This past week's offering was centered around Golden Turmeric.

I would never do it just to put his words into my own, so I will simply copy what he wrote and encourage your to follow him on your favorite social media platform. Or, check back here each week as I recap what he has shared.

Enjoy his writings!

The science behind Young Living's Golden Turmeric: Part 1 of 3

#goldenturmeric is a delicious mango rose drink that combines the benefits of high-quality #turmeric and #prebiotics to support your body’s natural response to #inflammation, #immuneresponse, #jointhealth, #mobility, and #recoveryafter exercise. Drinking one glass can support healthy digestion as well as your gut-brain axis.

A little about the science behind Golden Turmeric:

Turmeric rhizome has been traditionally used in India for its health properties thanks to its rich content in #polyphenols called #curcuminoids. The three main curcuminoids present (see photo of chemical structures) in a turmeric rhizome extract are (1) bis-desmethoxycurcumin, (2) desmethoxycurcumin, and (3) curcumin.

Even though these bioactives have shown beneficial properties, one of the main issues with curcuminoids is that they are poorly absorbed and rapidly eliminated by the body, which reduces their efficacy.

One of the main reasons why curcuminoids present poor absorption is due to their #hydrophobicity, which means that they are poorly soluble in water. Water solubility is an important characteristic needed for our body to easily absorb this class of compounds.

To overcome this problem, Young Living chose the right turmeric ingredient that is water-dispersible, has a high #potency at a low dose, is 100% natural, is free of synthetic carriers and emulsifiers, and has no need to add #piperine or black pepper extract to increase absorption.

Young Living’s Golden Turmeric delivers the same amount of curcuminoids as a much higher dose of competitive products on the market, which means that 300 mg of Golden Turmeric equals 1926 mg of standard turmeric extract, and 2264 mg of a standard combination of turmeric extract + piperine (from black pepper).

Overall, Golden Turmeric is 24x more #bioavailable, which means that at a lower dose, curcuminoids can reach the blood stream 24x more often than the standard turmeric extract.

How is this possible? YL’s turmeric extract is #emulsified and bonded in a matrix of #quillaia extract and #acacia gum resulting in a water-dispersible product with the desired particle size. When this turmeric combination is added to water, the quillaia extract is responsible for increasing the surface area of the curcuminoids, enhancing their bioavailability while passing through the #Duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach and the site where curcuminoids are #Absorbed.

For Golden Turmeric, #YL has included several symbiotic ingredients to pair with the #curcuminoids:

Turmeric extract (Curcuma longa): Turmeric contains naturally occurring actives including #curcumin which has important benefits that are backed by more than 290 clinical trials.

Tapioca #fiber: Tapioca fiber is a prebiotic that supports healthy digestion as well as the gut brain-axis.

#Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) resin extract: Commonly known as Indian #Frankincense, this resin has a long history of internal use in traditional Indian herbal health.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) root extract: #ginger is a world-renowned spice that has been used in Southeast Asia for thousands of years.

#lime Vitality™ essential oil (Citrus aurantifolia): This favorite Vitality citrus oil contributes a light and uplifting quality and a citrus taste to Golden Turmeric.

Natural mango and Moroccan rose flavors - Moroccan #rose is used in traditional Indian formulas to balance the mind and soothe the heart and emotions, while #Mango is the national fruit of India and the fruit of the kings. Ripe mango is considered sweet and heating.

The science behind Young Living's Golden Turmeric: Part 3 of 3

As any scientist at heart will agree, starting with the right question is key to discovering new facts. We know there are amazing health benefits for our bodies when our cells can be acted upon by #curcuminoids. The literature on this is clear and overwhelming. In fact, over 43,000 research studies and counting! The real question is, how do we make sure these #potent ingredients are reaching the cells where they are #bioactive?

Our bodies are predominately water based. This includes our #digestive system and our blood. This presents a problem when #plantbased bioactives are in lipid form. Lipids and water do not mix and they need a vehicle to carry them to the cells and deliver the contents without degrading them. The particle size is also important, as smaller particles allow for easier #transport and utilization in our body's cells.

With all of this in mind, we knew we had to make sure that our #YL turmeric was easy for the body to absorb and use so you can enjoy the full benefits. The curcumin in #goldenturmeric is superior to standardized extracts for three main reasons.

First, the particle size and distribution are standardized to a smaller and more uniform size allowing for easier absorption.

Secondly, these lipid-based actives are enveloped in a colloidal system, which means they can easily mix in water-based liquids. Think about how it mixes in your drink, but also the ease of the curcuminoids transferring through the digestive tract and the blood – all water based.

Third, most commercial #colloidal or emulsifier systems used to create other turmeric products use synthetic polymers such as polysorbates. The beautiful round golden beads you see in our product are completely plant based and free from GMO containing ingredients.

A common question we get asked is where is the #blackpepper? Isn’t it necessary to have black pepper in combination to absorb curcuminoids?

The answer to this question is not a simple yes or no, so let’s dive into this a bit more. Curcumin is not naturally very soluble in water, and is readily removed by the liver. This is known as “first pass elimination” and many vitamins, minerals and other botanicals are also susceptible to first pass #elimination.

Several years ago, scientists found an increase in curcumin in the blood when combined with an active constituent in black pepper called #piperine. This piperine travels to the liver and inhibits enzymes that are responsible for binding to and removing curcumin. By down regulating the active removal of curcumin in the liver it can reach the blood stream. That’s why so many turmeric products contain black pepper. However, reducing the activity of these enzymes also affects the liver metabolism of other substances such as medications, supplements, and even toxins.

Also, piperine is not very water soluble either and although it is still a great combination when smaller doses of curcumin are used in a dose dependent manner, our extraction method makes our turmeric so #bioavailable and #watersoluble that Golden Turmeric does not need black pepper in order to be absorbed. It dissolves completely on its own, and it tastes great!

I hope you all enjoyed this write up as much as I did. If you have not yet ordered your own Golden Turmeric, you can do so here!
