The high hormone years can feel like completely uncharted territory, not only for them, but for us as parents, grandparents, and caretakers as well. The hormones are making their emotions run rampant, peer pressure is stifling, homework and extracurricular stressors are weighing on them, and let’s be honest: they haven’t quite figured out how to positively respond to all of these things yet.
My children are 18, 17, 14, 12, and 7 sometimes it feels like the temperature of our home is dependent on how each one is feeling.
There is much we can do to support these turbulent times;
One of the most impactful issues for these children and young adults are hormones. The hormones can be all over the place, sometimes up and sometimes down. Some essential oils that are known as adaptogens have been shown to be helpful in balancing these out.
Ways to use: diffuse any of these alone or in combinations each night. Blends with Sandalwood and Lavender would be best for a restful night’s sleep.
These can also be used topically and would benefit teens if they used them both morning and night. Craft a roller bottle with 10 drops each Clary Sage, Frankincense, and Lavender, top with a carrier oil, and roll onto wrists and throat regularly.
Between school work, friends, sometimes jobs, and of course hormones, staying focus can become increasingly difficult. Try using one or a combination of the following essential oils:
Ways to use: mix with carrier oils and apply to the bottoms of the feet and wrists, or diffuse somewhere nearby, especially during times of study. A beautiful combination is Frankincense, Ylang ylang, and Peppermint. Rosemary is particularly helpful for improving memory.
At times we are all triggered, but during the years of high hormone surges, triggers may come without warning and without an understanding of why they are there at all. These essential oils, when diffused or applied daily, with intention of supporting a good mood all day long, will help ward off those unexpected mood swings that cause triggers.
Ways to use: diffuse any of these or any combination pretty much around the clock, or as often as your child is near a diffuser. Diffusing these overnight is especially helpful. You can also apply these topically, morning and night.
Endocrine System- Adrenal Glands
Our hormones are linked to so much more than just a once of month management or prepubescent raging and desires. Our hormones are linked to the entire endocrine system which include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testes, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, and adrenal glands.
In short, supporting our hormones involves so much more than a one stop shop.
What are adrenals? These are small glands in your back, above your kidneys. Adrenal glands regulate blood sugar and blood pressure, produce progesterone, create cortisol produce the androgens DHEA and androstenedione, precursors to testosterone , produce ‘fight or flight’ hormone, and keep the body from inflammation. It is crucial to support our adrenals. With today’s busy lifestyles we may have a habit of neglecting the adrenal glands. Consequently the body responds by creating excessive fatigue or other hormone disruption that tends to be chalked up to life stages and simply what everyone goes through. What we know now is the adrenal glands require extra attention and if there has been illness or long periods of stress.
When you know and understand what the adrenal gland functions are, you are better equipped in knowing how to support them. It’s like running. You know your body is made for running right? But you need fuel or about a mile down the road you’ll run out of gas and hit the proverbial wall. Adrenals need fuel support too!
Young Living has set us up so beautifully with essential oils and oil infused supplements in order to support and fuel our adrenal glands.
Essential Oils for support;
Endoflex is incredible for the adrenals and thyroid support, and if additional support is needed then add a drop or two of nutmeg over your application of Endoflex.
Adrenal Reset Protocol
Just like our computer systems need a reboot or refresh at times, so do certain organs in our own bodies need a restart. After a chronic illness or prolonged stress, consider a reset protocol. It's simple and after a few weeks of consistent application, the adrenals will feel refreshed and recharged.
Morning- Rosemary and Clove, begin with one drop of each oil over the adrenals before a warm shower or with a warm compress. This will stimulate a more energize body overall.
Evening- Lavender, Clary Sage and Ylang Ylang, same application methods as morning. This will stimulate sleep and rest.
Increase the amount of essential oils as desired.
Essential Oil infused supplements-
Each one of these supplements supports the adrenal glands in their own rite, yet with a different bent. Super B boasts an increase in B vitamins to the body, where as Powergize is B Vitamins in addition to Ashwagandha. See here for a stunning breakdown of Ashwagandha benefits. Thyromin is one for specific thyroid support. If your thyroid requires extra support, this one may be of particular interest to you. Thyromin provides more energy, immune system support, and helps the body handle everyday stress. Many people also report that it helps promote better sleep.

This is one of my personal favorites, it has supported me through my forties with much grace and ease. At a time when my doctor said I needed to take something so that every four weeks, when pain descended, emotions rose, and headaches were the norm, 6 drops of this, morning and night created such peace and harmony within. I'm certain you will find a similar experience.
As we age, our endocrine system in particular needs more support especially with the stress of today's world. Keep yourself in harmony, my friends.
